Hi! My name is Shelby and welcome to my reptile care blog! My boyfriend Andrew and I are HUGE animal lovers! We have two cats (Link and Zelda), a crested gecko (Ganon), a corn snake (Herbert) and a bearded dragon (Diego).
A little about me…
I have taken care of a wide variety of animals my entire life. I grew up on a small family farm where we had cows, chickens, goats, dogs, and cats. I also worked in a kennel where I got paid to play with doggies! (My favorite job to this day). I love spending my time by making sure my animals are happy and healthy, and I am always looking for new ways to enrich their lives.
I believe that same love and care we give our furry babies should also be given to our scaly ones!
Although I have experience working with all kinds of animals, my passion is reptiles! I feel that they are one of the most misunderstood animals in the trade and unfortunately that misunderstanding can lead to poor care. I mean, don’t we all make sure our cats and dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations and immunizations so they stay healthy? Don’t we take them to the vet if they are sick? I believe that same love and care we give our furry babies should also be given to our scaly ones!
How it all began…
Now even though I love reptiles today, I didn’t have the actual opportunity to interact with them or care for them until my boyfriend decided to get a corn snake, Herbert. As a kid (and I’m sure many others as well), I was always told that snakes and other “creepy crawly” things were just that… creepy crawly things. So, I never actively sought them out. But from the moment I laid eyes on Herbert, I was instantly in love. He wasn’t creepy crawly at all, he was cute! (And man, he had a personality!)
So when Andrew brought Herbert home, I made sure he was going to have the same love and care that our cats Link and Zelda had. Andrew already had a little experience with reptiles and had done his own research over the previous months, but I wanted to know more. From that point forward, I spent countless hours researching topics like substrate, lighting, temperature gradients and more.
We found a lot of great resources online but I felt like I really had to sort through the misinformation to understand certain key areas of reptile keeping. So, I have combined by HOURS of research into this blog to make it easier for YOU to properly care for your reptiles without the headache or hassle!
